Overview: The Valley of the Lilies Half Marathon & 5K has a scenic course, featuring rolling hills, on the campus of WCU and along the Tuckaseigee River in Cullowhee, NC.

The Western Carolina University School of Health Sciences and the Department of Campus Recreation & Wellness bring you the sixth annual Valley of the Lilies event.

Proceeds: The proceeds of the race will go to students at WCU to assist in professional presentations, travel to conferences, and other professional development opportunities. We have a strong tradition of undergraduate research and professional engagement, which often leads to student travel and presentations at conferences in his or her field of study. Race proceeds will assist students with the expense associated with these outstanding opportunities. Many students are not able to engage in professional development without financial assistance. The race is hosted by the School of Health Sciences and the Department of Campus Recreation & Wellness.

Shirts: All race shirts are technical running short-sleeved shirts. Anyone registered by March 5th will be guaranteed a race shirt in the requested size. Those registered after March 5th may have to pick up their race shirt at the Campus Recreation Center following the race if supplies run out on race day.  Shirts will not be mailed to participants who are unable to pick up their shirt

Benefit for the SSG Charlie Bagwell Memorial Scholarship Fund.

On May 30, 2007 our community suffered the loss of a great man and sustained the first casualty of war since Vietnam. SSG Charlie Bagwell was killed in Afghanistan when a rocket-propelled grenade shot down his Chinook helicopter. CharlieWe have since joined together as a community to welcome our soldier home, and now we have the opportunity to join together again as a community to pay tribute to the sacrifice of our beloved soldier.

The SSG Charlie Bagwell Memorial Scholarship Fund has been established by several members of the 1997 Rosman High School graduating class, as a tribute to our fallen hero. No greater honor have we had than to have known and befriended such a brave man. He was a true friend to all who knew him, and a hero to all of those he fought to protect. It is our hope that we may be able to pass along our joy in the memories Charlie left with us through scholarships to well-deserving students, as they pursue their academic endeavors.

Please join us in commemorating the life and service of our hometown hero through donations to the SSG Charlie Bagwell Memorial Scholarship Fund. If we all give some, we can honor one who gave all.
